Two gunshot victims were in good condition at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Sunday after a man shot himself in the chest, and the same bullet struck his stepdaughter, police said.

Jose Lara, 35, and Anita Luna, 19, both of Santa Paula, were in good condition in the intensive care unit after undergoing surgery Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said the shooting apparently occurred in Lara’s car on Saturday about 6:07 p.m. in the 1400 block of East Harvard Boulevard.

Lara was seated in the front seat and apparently shot himself, Sgt. Wes Easley said.

The bullet may have passed through him and the seat, hitting Luna in the right knee and the stomach, Easley said.

Police had no further details on the shooting.
