Controversy Over Gates

Share

Kudos to The Times for its editorial “The Ineptitude of L.A. Government” (April 10). If the principals were to step back and contemplate their weeks of faultfinding in lieu of fact-finding, they would not be proud of their actions.

Gates would find police brutality to be more widespread than he is willing to admit. Such brutality is probably not racially motivated, but rather directed at any citizen caught in King’s situation.

The mayor and City Council would discover that no police chief should be given tenure similar to that of a constitutional monarch, and that this situation should have long since been corrected by quality leadership.

All parties should have known that the truest measure of a public servant is how he or she functions in a crisis, and by this yardstick, the whole gang should pack it in.
