Downey : Council to Decide Friday on Budget Cuts of $2 Million
The Downey City Council will hold a special meeting Friday to decide how to trim about $2 million from a proposed $36-million general fund budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The cuts are required to compensate for revenue shortfalls. Sales tax and other city revenues have dropped in the shadow of the current recession, City Manager Gerald M. Caton said.
Police and firefighting services will be protected from the cuts, but various other municipal services are expected to be affected, Caton said. No layoffs of city employees are anticipated, but vacancies probably will go unfilled, he said.
The 4:30 p.m. meeting will be held in the City Council chamber at City Hall, 11111 Brookshire Ave.
