Authorities are investigating the cause of an early-morning blaze in San Marcos on Thursday that heavily damaged a warehouse containing seven businesses.

The blaze caused an estimated $500,000 damage to the metal structure and an undetermined loss to its contents.

San Marcos firefighters responded to the fire at 380 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road at 1:39 a.m. and 20 minutes later upgraded the fire to a third alarm, Division Chief John Twyman said.

About 70 firefighters from San Marcos, Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Escondido, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Deer Springs and the Elfin Forest fire departments extinguished the blaze at 4:20 a.m. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The 60,000-square-foot structure housed Ace Van & Storage, Sac Masonry, Strong Step Manufacturing, Wesrim Industries, ABF Freight, Eagle Packaging and Root Trucking.

San Marcos investigators called for more inspectors from Vista, Escondido and the Sheriff’s Department because of the magnitude of the fire, Twyman said. The building was reported to be fully involved when firefighters arrived.
