SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The high school portion of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays will take place today and Saturday at Mt. SAC but several local runners will not be concentrating on their specialties.

Deena Drossin and Tiffany York, both of Agoura High, will be running on distance-relay teams rather than in individual events.

Drossin, a University of Arkansas-bound senior who ran a nation-leading 10 minutes 19.63 seconds in the 3,200 meters in the Arcadia Invitational last weekend, and York (10:47.13) will help Agoura chase the meet record of 20:20.5 in the 4 x 1,600 relay, set by a Mexican high school national team in 1987.

“We’re really looking to get that meet record in the 4 x 1,600 relay,” Charger Coach Bill Duley said.

Rio Mesa sophomore Marion Jones will set her sights on a personal-best effort in the 400 even though she also is scheduled to compete in the 100.

Jones ran a personal-best 54.21 at Mt. SAC a year ago and currently has the nation’s fastest time this season at 54.66.

In the 100 and 200 at Arcadia, Jones established national sophomore and age-15 records of 11.38 and 22.87. Both times are the fastest in the nation this year.

The 4 x 1,600 relays will be run tonight and Jones will run Saturday.
