Helping Shoemaker Was Thing to Do
The article in today’s Times sports section (April 11), “Shoemaker Was Legally Under the Influence,” prompted me to write this letter. After all of the advertising and public service announcements about drinking and driving, it appears to be having little effect on the driving population, including celebrities.
Don Pierce, former jockey and now trainer, is quoted as saying, “I’ve seen him drink a lot more and drive. There was nothing new about having a couple of beers after golf.” What an incredible statement. I can’t say that I have any sympathy for Shoemaker. And regarding Mr. Pierce, I would not want him to be a friend of mine.
