GOLF ROUNDUP : Nicklaus Builds Lead to 8 Shots

Jack Nicklaus took an eight-shot lead after three rounds of the Senior PGA Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla..

Nicklaus led by five strokes before Saturday’s play, saw his lead dwindle to one stroke over Jim Dent at the turn, then put himself in position to win for the fourth time in six tries among the 50-and-over set.

Moments after Nicklaus reached the turn, rain, wind and lightning swept over the PGA National Golf Club and play was held up for two hours. When play resumed, Nicklaus provided the electricity.

He finished with a 69 for a 201 total, 15 under par.

“I haven’t won yet,” Nicklaus said. “I’ll prepare for tomorrow just like I would any other round. I’ll try to play just as well as I can.”

Bruce Crampton was second at 209 after shooting a 70.

Davis Love III shot a three-under 68 for a a three-shot lead over Ian Baker-Finch after three rounds of the Heritage Classic at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Love, whose first of two PGA Tour victories came in the 1987 Heritage, is at 12-under-par 201 on the Harbour Town Golf Links.

Baker-Finch shot a 65 after a second-round 64. At one point, the Australian had birdied 13 of 25 holes.

The first two days of the Benson & Hedges Invitational at St. Mellion, England, Masters champion Ian Woosnam of Wales shot 82. Saturday it was Nick Faldo’s turn for a 10-over-par round.

Jose Rivero of Spain shot a five-under-par 67 and leads by three strokes.
