Bo Schembechler, president of the Detroit Tigers, set an Aug. 1 deadline for city and county officials to devise a plan for a new ballpark to replace Tiger Stadium.

Schembechler called for a new ballpark to be located near downtown. He said it would be the anchor of an enterprise zone for retail, residential and industrial development in the city.

Schembechler ruled out renovation of Tiger Stadium. Tiger Stadium and Boston’s Fenway Park are the oldest parks in the majors, both having opened April 20, 1912.
