COUNTYWIDE : Housing Aid Center to Open in Oxnard

Share

Federal officials said Tuesday that they will open a center in Oxnard for farm workers hurt by last winter’s crop freeze to apply for housing aid.

The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Center for Employment Training at 718 S. A St., officials said.

Meanwhile, a center originally set up at the Ventura County fairgrounds was scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Tuesday. As of Tuesday afternoon, only 24 people had applied at the center, which opened Friday, officials said.

Local agricultural experts said that the center probably was too far from the farm workers, and that word of funding was not spread soon enough.

Last week, President Bush approved a plan to offer housing assistance for farm workers in 33 counties who were affected when temperatures plummeted in December, killing millions of dollars worth of crops.

Applicants must produce documents such as notices of eviction or foreclosure, layoff notices and proof that they own or rent a residence. Immigrants seeking amnesty in the United States are among those eligible for the aid.
