More than 1 million students nationwide were screened for the scholarship program when they took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year. The National Merit Scholarship Corp., which chooses more than 6,000 high school seniors for the awards each year, announced the first group of 1,250 winners last week.

The students--chosen on the basis of academic performance, test scores and extracurricular activities--were selected by corporations that sponsor the awards. The students are also required to submit autobiographies and recommendations from their high schools.
