A Northern California man died Thursday after the car he was driving crashed off Interstate 8 in the Boulevard area of East County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim was identified as Clarence Hunt, 77, of San Anselmo in Marin County, who died at the scene. His wife, Jeanne, a passenger, was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where a spokeswoman said she was in fair condition.

Hunt was driving the sedan when, for unknown reasons, it veered down an embankment and overturned, coming to rest on its roof, officials said.

Hunt may have suffered a heart attack before the incident, which occurred at 1:10 p.m., authorities said.

He was wearing a seat belt, and the vehicle’s air bag did operate, the San Diego County medical examiner’s office said.

The car was westbound, just east of McCain Valley Road, when it left the freeway.
