AVOCADO COPS: A university worker who spotted thieves making off with $26.50 worth of avocados from the UC Irvine experimental station last fall has reaped a $542 reward. The California Avocado Commission, with headquarters in Santa Ana, said the fruit taken was an experimental variety. . . . Why the odd-numbered reward? Commission official Avi Crane said it was the average of amounts suggested by the commission’s executive committee. He said avocado theft is a $10-million-a-year problem.
