From Staff and Wire Reports

USC defeated California, 10-1, in baseball at Berkeley Sunday to clinch its first division title since 1978, when the Trojans won the Southern Division of the Pacific 8. It became the Pacific 10 the next year, when the Arizona schools joined the conference.

USC went on in 1978 to win its 11th NCAA championship, which was the Trojans’ sixth of the ‘70s.

USC, 22-5 in conference play, earned the 1991 Southern Division title outright when second-place Stanford, blowing a 10-0 lead, was beaten by Arizona, 21-11, Sunday at Tucson. Stanford is now 14-9 in the Pac-10.
