Ranchers Urge Care for Earth

Share

On behalf of the cattle producers of Ventura County, we would like to salute the observance of Earth Day, 1991. As cattlemen, we have chosen a way of life that allows us to be close to the land--we see on a daily basis the importance of protecting and preserving our country’s natural resources. In truth, every day is “Earth Day” for American cattle producers.

Optimum use of natural resources to produce food involves use of both animals and plants. For example, about half the land area of the United States is strictly nonirrigated grazing land--not suitable for crop production. That land would be of no use as a food resource were it not for grazing animals.

Cattle production is a family enterprise in this county and most of California. Farmers and ranchers and their families are responsible for taking care of the land to assure a livelihood for themselves and for generations that will follow them in the business. Cattlemen are living examples of the wisdom expressed in the old saying: “We do not inherit the land from our forefathers, we borrow it from our children.”

As people who work close to the earth on a daily basis, we are glad to see more attention to the environment. Ventura County cattlemen and their families are proud of their heritage and commitment to caring for natural resources, while providing a safe and wholesome food.
