Koll Co. said Tuesday that it had signed pro golfer Jack Nicklaus to design two golf courses for resorts the Newport Beach developer is building at the tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, the company’s first foray into resorts.

Nicklaus has designed 79 courses around the world, but the Koll courses will be the first he has designed in Mexico.

Nicklaus will design 27 holes for Koll at the Hotel Palmilla, which Koll bought in 1984. The 35-year-old Palmilla was the first resort hotel built in the Los Cabos region at the tip of the peninsula. Koll is also building a 900-acre gated resort around the hotel with 1,500 homes, a golf club and a tennis club.

The company said it had just obtained loans to begin putting in roads at another resort, called Cabo del Sol. The 18-hole Nicklaus golf course there will be the first of up to four at the resort, which will cover 1,800 acres.

Koll also said it plans up to four beachfront hotels at the resort as well as and 3,500 homes.
