About 27% of the football and basketball players admitted to NCAA Division I-A schools in the fall of 1989 did not meet regular academic standards, according to a survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Those athletes were given “special authority admission,” while only 4% of all students were “special admits.”
According to the survey, 10 institutions granted “special authority admission” to more than 70% of their football players. Houston had the highest percentage (93.8%), followed by Washington (82.4%), Clemson (82%) and California (81%).
