Club Aids Hearing Testing

The Sertoma Club of Whittier has donated $1,000 to Biola University’s Speech and Hearing Clinic. The donation will be used to purchase an audiometer, a reinforcement device for testing the hearing of preschool children.

The audiometer is installed into the hearing-testing booth and works as a reward system for children. When the frequency sounds are heard, the child pushes a button and sees an animal play the drums or dance. The device is designed to reinforce cooperative behavior and alleviate boredom on the part of the child.

The Speech and Hearing Clinic is a low-cost therapy clinic run by the communication department at Biola University. It is open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The clinic offers individual therapy as a service to the community.
