Aztecs Upset BYU in WAC Women’s Tennis

San Diego State, ranked 18th in the nation, upset No. 12 Brigham Young on Saturday, 5-4, to win the Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis championships at Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Aztecs got two crucial victories as freshman Tanya Lauer beat BYU junior Maddy Biekman, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (9-7) at No. 6 singles to earn a split in singles, and Eva Olivarez and Paige Hammond came from behind to defeat Lesley Barbour and Federica Lentini in doubles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Olivarez, a junior, was named the WAC player of the year after the tournament. The All-WAC team was also announced with Dorey Brandt a singles pick and Brandt and Nicole Storto named in doubles.

SDSU faces 14th-ranked Tennessee Wednesday at Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

SDSU’s Ricardo Herrera defeated teammate Joe McDonough, 6-1, 6-2, to win the WAC men’s singles title at Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Herrera was seeded No. 1, McDonough No. 3.

BASEBALL

Rick Page and Greg Quam had RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift SDSU to a 5-4 victory over No. 7 Hawaii in the second game of a WAC doubleheader. Hawaii (42-14, 18-5) won the first game, 11-9. SDSU is 35-15, 11-6.

Louie Diaz had four hits on the day and Ernie Isola had three with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the first game, as UC San Diego (14-22) split a doubleheader with visiting Cal State San Bernardino (23-10). CSUSB won the first game, 4-3, but UCSD won the second, 10-3, as Doran Yount had a double and a two-run homer.

Rick Doane’s seventh homer, with one on in the bottom of the eighth inning, gave University of San Diego a 6-4 victory over San Francisco in the first game of a West Coast Conference doubleheader. Marc Bouchard (1-4) pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings of relief. Dan McAdoo had two RBIs for USD (21-31-2, 11-21). USF (14-37, 9-23) won the second game, 4-0.

Point Loma Nazarene lost the first game, 7-3, but beat Cal Baptist beat 7-2 in the second game of a season-ending Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader. PLNC (19-30, 5-15) was led by Rich Miller, who had four hits, four runs, an RBI and stolen base. Cal Baptist is 27-17, 11-9.

SDSU needed two victories over No. 17 Utah to win its first WAC regular-season championship.
