Share

Two teen-agers died of head injuries when their motorcycle careened out of control and struck a block wall shortly before midnight Saturday, police said.

Killed in the 11:58 p.m. crash were Martin Payan, 19, of Ontario, and his passenger, Florence Lopez, 18, of Pomona. Police Sgt. Jim Kaminsky said neither was wearing a helmet.

Kaminsky said Payan and Lopez were northbound up a steep hill on Superior Avenue when the driver lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a wall just south of Ticonderoga Street.

It was not immediately known why Payan lost control, but several witnesses told police he was traveling at a high rate of speed, then veered suddenly into the wall, Kaminsky said.

“There were several witnesses, and they said he did not come into contact with any other vehicles,” the sergeant said.

He said toxicological tests will be performed to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the incident. An investigation is continuing.
