Prison Guard Indicted on Smuggling Charge

A guard at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly smuggling whiskey and cocaine to an inmate.
Willie Simmons, 30, of Inglewood, was indicted last week for allegedly taking the contraband into the prison in a gym bag for a $1,000 fee paid by an undercover agent. Simmons was arrested April 18 after the inmate, who was cooperating with investigators in an undercover sting against Simmons, allegedly received the cocaine and two bottles of whiskey.Simmons, who is free on $25,000 bail, faces a maximum 71 years in prison and a $1.25-million fine if convicted on all counts.
