Kevin Cogan put his Buick-powered Lola atop the speed list with a lap of 226.677 m.p.h. during practice for the Indianapolis 500.
His fast lap surpassed the 226.569 by Rick Mears in a Chevy-powered Penske and showed that the Buick-powered cars, which have a horsepower advantage at Indianapolis because of the turbocharger rules, could be the ones to beat for the pole position when qualifying opens Saturday.
Emerson Fittipaldi, the track record-holder who started from the pole in last year’s race, moved up to third-fastest in practice with a lap of 226.512.
