Share

A day-care center will open this month at Stanford Elementary School, providing spaces for 75 children aged 5 to 12, center director Patti Stebbins said.

Pat Halberstadt, executive director of the Girls Club, said that the Stanford Kids Club will begin accepting applications today, with priority given to Stanford students for the first 30 days.

The center, run by the Garden Grove Girls Club, will offer day care before and after school starting May 20, and also daylong care during the summer. Activities for students enrolled in K-6 grades will include cooking, sports, and arts and crafts. Costs during the school year run from $55 to $95 a month based on the age of the child and length of time under supervision. Summer fees run $70 per week and there is a $35 registration fee for all programs.

The Kids Club is a cooperative effort between the Girls Club, the city and the school district. The city donated staff time to prepare a grant proposal, which succeeded in securing $300,000 from the State Board of Education in 1989. That money was used to purchase two prefabricated buildings, she said.

The center, located at 12721 Magnolia St., also will lease space from the school district at $1 a year for 10 years, and a portion of the elementary school playground will be fenced off for use by the Kids Club. During the school hours that the center does not operate, the school may use the site for special projects.
