BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Vincent to Players: Do Not Retaliate
With incidents involving Cleveland’s Albert Belle and Oakland’s Jose Canseco in mind, Commissioner Fay Vincent said he can’t imagine any excuse for a player to retaliate against a heckler.
Belle threw a ball at a Cleveland Stadium fan who mocked his alcohol problems Saturday and was suspended for seven days by AL President Bobby Brown. Canseco had to be restrained from going into the stands at Yankee Stadium after hearing disparaging comments about his Cuban heritage, his wife and his relationship with the rock star Madonna.
Second baseman Luis Sojo, who is batting .212, sat out for the fifth time in 15 games. . . . After activating Pascual Perez from the disabled list, the Yankees outrighted former Angel Rich Monteleone to triple-A Columbus.
