OXNARD : Council Overturns Subdivision Denial

Share

The Oxnard City Council has approved a permit for a proposed 56-home subdivision that the Planning Commission had rejected.

The commission had denied the permit for the subdivision planned by Wilshire West Inc. of Los Angeles, because the city is enduring a water shortage.

But the council voted unanimously Tuesday to overrule the commission and follow its staff recommendation to approve the permit. Council members argued that Oxnard’s main water supplier, the Calleguas Municipal Water District, had not imposed a moratorium on water hookups on the city.

“By denying this project on the basis of water scarcity, the City Council sets a precedent for halting further residential development during the drought,” said Community Development Director Richard Maggio, who urged the council to approve the development.
