BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry’s Shoulder Heals Quickly

Share

Wednesday night, Darryl Strawberry had crashed into the right-field wall making a catch and suffered a separated left shoulder. The main questions were how long he would be out and whether a term on the disabled list would be necessary. But when he was examined Friday by Frank Jobe, Strawberry was declared fit to play and relatively free of pain, with a full range of motion in the shoulder. He hit the ball hard in batting practice and threw out Dave Magadan at second base in the first inning. Strawberry, who underwent a religious awakening over the winter, credited faith healing for his quick recovery. “It’s a miracle that this happened in my life,” he said. “I had a separated shoulder. I could’ve been out who knows (how long). But my pastor prayed for me and laid hands on me and healed me. It’s just a miracle.”

Orel Hershiser makes his second start tonight at Bakersfield and third minor league rehabilitation start overall, hoping to expand on his last appearance earlier this week, when he threw 68 pitches for Albuquerque. He has pitched 10 scoreless innings in his rehab starts, but team trainer Pat Screnar says that’s an insignificant statistic. “I don’t think (Hershiser) concerns himself with that,” Screnar said. “It’s great but it’s a bonus. The bottom line is how he feels, the consistency of his pitches and how he feels he’s getting back into the flow of the game.” . . . Frank Viola’s strikeout of Kal Daniels in the second inning was the 1,500th of his career.
