ANAHEIM : Meals on Wheels Workers Honored

About 140 volunteers of the Anaheim-based Meals on Wheels program were honored by city officials last week when the city named a day in the group’s honor and thanked workers for their community service.
May 15 is now Meals on Wheels Day, to commemorate the volunteer organization that brings lunches and dinners to about 100 homebound seniors five days a week.
“We’re an all-volunteer organization. They’re the heart of the program,” said Penny Hammond, president of the group. “They’re all dedicated individuals.”
In addition to thanking the volunteers, city officials and group leaders lauded community groups and businesses that also contribute to the program.
Meals on Wheels buys its food from the Anaheim Union High School District and distributes it to residents for a small charge.
Hammond said the price for service does not cover the costs of buying and delivering the meals.
The city and the high school district issued proclamations supporting Meals on Wheels at a luncheon Wednesday.
