CAMARILLO : Intersection Where Boy Died Is Studied

Share

Camarillo is conducting an engineering study of an intersection where a 9-year-old boy died in a traffic accident two weeks ago, officials said.

The city’s Streets and Transportation Committee is reviewing requests to put a four-way stop sign or a traffic signal at the intersection of Mission Oaks Boulevard and Fieldcrest Drive, said Dan Greeley, city director of engineering services.

The committee will update the Camarillo City Council on the study’s progress at a meeting Wednesday. The full report will go to the council June 12.

The intersection, near Las Colinas Elementary School, is overseen by a crossing guard on weekdays during the early morning and afternoon, Greeley said.

Calls for the study increased after the May 7 accident that killed Brian Arimura of Camarillo. Brian was hit at 8:10 p.m. by a van driven by Camarillo resident Yau Chen, police said.

An investigation by Camarillo traffic officers and the Ventura County district attorney’s office concluded that Chen was not at fault. Brian stepped in front of the van, and Chen did not have enough time to stop, police said.

There is now a stop sign on Fieldcrest Drive, Greeley said. The speed limit is 25 m.p.h. when children are present and 45 m.p.h. otherwise, he said.
