Philadelphia catcher Darren Daulton had a good night at the plate against a minor league team in an exhibition game at Moosic, Pa., getting a single and a double in the Phillies’ 5-2 loss to the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, their triple-A International League team.

After the game, the Phillies announced they would take Daulton off the 15-day disabled list. Daulton was playing for the first time since being injured when a car driven by teammate Lenny Dykstra crashed May 6. Dykstra is on the 60-day disabled list.

Meanwhile, the Phillies placed pitcher Danny Cox on the 15-day disabled list. Cox strained a groin muscle Saturday in a game against the Chicago Cubs.

Concern over Nolan Ryan’s sore shoulder is serious enough to spark a visit to Southern California to see Dr. Lewis Yocum, the Angels’ orthopedic specialist and a longtime friend of Ryan’s. But Yocum found nothing to change the original diagnosis of strained shoulder muscles, the Rangers said, and General Manger Tom Grieve said Ryan’s trip should not be seen as a sign of trouble.

However, the Dallas Morning News reported that the Rangers have put minor league pitcher Jose Guzman on standby in case Ryan’s ailment continues.

Right-hander Ron Robinson, the Milwaukee Brewers’ winningest pitcher last season at 12-5, will have arthroscopic surgery in Los Angeles today to correct a problem in his right elbow. Dr. Frank Jobe will perform the surgery.

Brewer General Manager Harry Dalton said Robinson, 30, who signed a three-year contract with Milwaukee last August after being acquired in a trade in June, is expected to be sidelined until September after the surgery to remove a bone spur from the elbow.

He went on the 15-day disabled list April 12, and when he failed to make progress, a re-examination found the bone spur. Robinson has had surgery on the same elbow in 1987, 1988 and 1989.

The Oakland Athletics activated pitcher Gene Nelson, disabled since a freak dugout accident on April 8, and optioned pitcher Bruce Walton to triple-A Tacoma. Nelson, while sitting in the dugout on opening night, was hurt when he was hit by a line-drive foul ball.
