FILLMORE : Schools Suggest Cuts to Balance Budget

The Fillmore Unified School District would balance its 1991-92 budget by cutting about $70,000, but would not lay off any teachers under a proposal presented Tuesday to the school board.

The cuts include office supplies, staff development and curriculum development, but would have little effect on classrooms in Fillmore’s five schools, said Barbara Spieler, district director of business services.

“We feel extremely fortunate to be able to balance the budget without annihilating programs or people,” Spieler said.

The budget will not be finalized until the end of July, Spieler said.

Under the budget proposal, district employees would have to pay some of their health care costs. In the past, the district paid all benefits, but costs rose this year above the maximum the district has agreed to pay, so employees will have to pay the difference, Assistant Supt. Bob Kernen said. Covering all health care costs next year would create a $300,000 deficit, he said.
