SANTA ANA : City Embraces Its Persian Gulf Vets

Share

Yellow ribbons and small American flags adorned the City Council chambers Monday as the city officially welcomed home the two dozen Santa Ana residents and city employees who served in the Persian Gulf War.

“We all, obviously, are deeply proud of everything you did,” Mayor Daniel H. Young said during the City Hall ceremony. “We watched, with great glory, this country bounce back psychologically; we saw that marvelous new military at work, and it put a tremendous sense of pride in all of our hearts.”

The military servicemen and women were presented certificates recognizing their participation in the war.

The council also voted to extend to June 30, 1992, benefits for city employees who are on active duty in the Middle East. The city currently is providing the difference between the city salary and military pay, and is continuing health benefits for dependents.

An extension was required because the benefits program--which affects eight city employees--was scheduled to expire at the end of June.
