With Ice Melting, Trout Bite Warms at Mammoth Lakes

Share

It is still winter as far as the Eastern Sierra is concerned. Cold winds are blowing, rain and snow are falling. The ice-melt is five weeks behind schedule.

However, a warming trend is forecast for the weekend, and conditions should be ideal in at least half of the waters open for the Blind Bogey tournament Sunday at Mammoth Lakes.

Lakes Mamie and George remain frozen, but Mary and Twin are producing trophy trout and thus will be the site of the competition for the $3,000 in prizes.

“The two lakes will be loaded,” said Don Barrett of the Twin Lakes general store, referring to the stocking of about 1,000 trophy trout from a nearby private hatchery.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including largest fish and a Blind Bogey drawing. There is no entry fee. Information: (800) 367-6572.
