BIG WEST BASEBALL : Titans Place Three Players on Conference’s First Team

Starting pitcher Dan Naulty, reliever Chris Robinson and catcher Matt Hattabaugh were Cal State Fullerton’s representatives on the all-Big West Conference baseball first team, which was announced Tuesday.

Two Titans were named to the second team and three were honorable mention. Fullerton finished 34-22 and co-champions of the conference but did not receive a berth in the NCAA tournament.

UC Irvine (24-32) had one second-team selection and one honorable mention.

Naulty, a junior right-hander, was 8-3 with a 3.38 earned-run average and two saves. Robinson, a senior right-hander, led the Big West in saves with nine. Hattabaugh batted .304 with seven homers and 38 runs batted in.

Fresno State right-hander Bobby Jones and UC Santa Barbara outfielder Jerrold Rountree were honored as the most valuable player and most valuable pitcher. Bob Bennett of Fresno State was coach of the year.

Second-team selections included Fullerton third baseman Jason Moler, Fullerton designated hitter Frank Charles and Irvine outfielder Mike Goodcase.

Honorable mentions included Fullerton second baseman Steve Sisco, Fullerton shortstop Phil Nevin, Fullerton pitcher Jack Bailey and Irvine pitcher Chris Huber.
