About That Title, General, Sir: You Were Half-Right
After receiving an honorary knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Gen. (H. Norman) Schwarzkopf was half-right when he quipped that he did not expect to be addressed as “Sir General” but as “General, Sir.”
In the United Kingdom, military rank always precedes a title. For example, General Montgomery was addressed as Gen. Sir Bernard Montgomery, and if the reader is still interested, during WWII the writer was addressed as Flight Lt. Baron Christian de Beer, RAF (work that one out)!
