California IN BRIEF : STOCKTON : Store Sued Over Check Policy
Prosecutors have filed the first lawsuit under a new state law that bars merchants from requiring consumers to show their credit card when buying items with a check. Dist. Atty. John Phillips said the suit, filed in San Joaquin County Superior Court, seeks $50,000 in civil penalties and a permanent injunction against Save-Mart Supermarkets. He said the unfair business practices action is based on photographs obtained by investigators. They show an overhead sign in the Food Bank supermarket stating the store’s policy of requiring a credit card for identification when cashing a check, Phillips said in a statement.
