COUNTYWIDE : Colleges Must Cut Another $670,000

Ventura County Community College District officials, who already have cut $4.6 million from next year’s budget, learned Tuesday night that they will have to cut another $670,000.

Worsening state revenue projections, along with new charges that the county is imposing to collect property taxes for the district, caused the added shortfall, Vice Chancellor Tom Kimberling told the Board of Trustees.

District officials are expected to meet Friday to discuss cuts at the Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura campuses and at the district’s headquarters.

The board is considering a $64-million budget for the 1991-1992 year, compared with this year’s $63.7-million budget. A tentative budget is expected to be approved at a June 4 meeting, but the board will not adopt a final budget until September.

The budget plan reflects $4.6 million in cuts district officials mandated in March. Classes are to be eliminated districtwide, resulting in layoffs of 20 to 50 part-time instructors. Other cutbacks include not filling vacant positions and asking administrators to teach classes.
