Pepperdine sophomore middle blocker Tom Sorenson and UCLA sophomore setter Mike Sealy were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.’s All-American second team.

Sorenson also was selected on the All-Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. first team. Second-team selections from UCLA were senior outside hitter Carl Henkel and Sealy.

UCLA gymnasts Natalie Britton and Renee Kelly were named to the All-Pacific 10 Conference women’s team.

Four students from Westside high schools were recognized as scholar-athletes in the California Angels/Ford Academic awards program.

Honorees and their grade-point averages on a four-point scale included Katie Ross of Immaculate Heart, 3.83; Erin L. Mosher of Marlborough, 3.57; Christine Boehle of Notre Dame Academy, 3.58, and Tanya Chan of Los Angeles Westlake. The Westlake gymnastics team, which had a collective GPA of 3.29, was among honored teams.

Erick Pichel of Palisades High was named the most valuable boys’ volleyball player in the Coastal Conference.

The all-conference first team included Morgan Chapman, Kuivan Hariri and Lars Winter of Palisades, Douglas Hughes and Jason Hughes of Westchester and Jason Istok of University.

Members of the second team were John Lee and Marty Leshin of Palisades, David Ottenfeld, Philip Tongsak and Matt Scoll of University and Andy Spitser of Westchester.

Members of the third team were David Charvet and Aaron Miller of University, Brian Hirai of Westchster, Abdulmalik Kalifa of Hamilton and Bart Rachmil and Sam Whang of Palisades.

Miriam Kornberg shot 180 for 36 holes to win the championship of the Penmar Women’s Golf Club tournament. Faye Greens came in second with 182.

Low gross winners were Evelyn Shulem in the second flight, Bonnie Nelson and Hazel Avasian in a tie in the third flight and Addie Vinicks in the fourth flight.

Low net winners were Phyllis Morrison in the first flight. Ann Kuhl and Edith Taggart in a tie in the second flight, Helen Ziman in the third flight and Marilyn Pell in the fourth flight.

Steven C. Good of Santa Monica and David Sollott of Beverly Hills are co-chairmen of the fifth annual Monty Hall Golf Tournament. The tournament, a fund-raiser to send athletes to the World Maccabiah Games in Israel, will be played June 3 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.
