Alex Garcia of San Fernando stopped tough Rocky Sekorski--who lasted four rounds against George Foreman in a heavyweight bout early last year--at 2 minutes 37 seconds of the first round Thursday in a scheduled 10-round fight at Bally’s Casino Resort. The bout was televised nationally by ESPN.

Garcia, 20-1 with 16 knockouts, staggered Sekorski of St. Paul, Minn., in the first 30 seconds with two jolting uppercuts to the chin. With 30 seconds left in the round, Garcia, 219, hit Sekorski with a flurry of punches, capped by a crushing overhand right to the jaw. Sekorski, 230, stumbled backward and fell heavily onto his hands and knees. Referee Toby Gibson immediately halted the bout.

Sekorski, 23-10, had not fought in more than a year. Against Foreman, he lasted into the fourth round despite being hit with dozens of heavy punches. A year before he fought Foreman, he lasted 12 rounds with former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion Michael Dokes.

Garcia has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Foreman later this year.

“Right now, I don’t know if I want to fight Foreman,” Garcia said. “If everything is right and the timing is right, then maybe.”
