SOFTBALL NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS : Arizona Beats UCLA’s Fernandez in Ninth

UCLA’s Lisa Fernandez gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bruins lost to Arizona, 1-0, at the NCAA women’s softball College World Series Friday at Oklahoma City.

Top-ranked UCLA (53-6), one of six teams left in the competition that started with eight, will play Missouri in today’s first game. Cal State Long Beach, which defeated Fresno State, 3-0, faces Arizona after Fresno State plays Florida State.

Arizona’s Julie Jones singled off Fernandez (20-3) to open the ninth inning, and after advancing to third on a walk and a sacrifice, she scored on Lisa Guise’s single.

Freshman Susie Parra was Arizona’s starting pitcher and was relieved in the sixth by Debbie Daye, who picked up the victory to improve to 28-8.

Long Beach scored three unearned runs in the third in its victory over Fresno, which committed three errors.

In another game, Florida State eliminated Nevada Las Vegas, 3-1.
