BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Griffin Is Back, Smith Is Sent Out
Alfredo Griffin was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday, effective today. The Dodgers sent infielder Greg Smith to triple-A Albuquerque.
Mike Sharperson needs a couple of more days for his strained leg muscle to heal, so he probably will remain on the disabled list until next week, when Jose Offerman probably will go down.
Late Friday Manager Tom Lasorda said he had not yet decided who would start, although he probably will test Griffin’s soundness before a decision is made on Offerman.
The Dodgers are 9-4 with Offerman starting, 15-12 with Griffin.
Chris Gwynn was not thrilled when he was asked to pinch-hit against reliever Rob Dibble with one out in the ninth inning with the Dodgers leading by eight runs Friday. Gwynn, whose muscles were tight after sitting on the bench for three hours, struck out on four pitches. . . . “The way I feel about that should be self-explanatory,” Gwynn said. “Those kinds of situations just aren’t fun.”
Jose Mota, 26, the oldest son of Dodger coach Manny Mota, was recalled by the San Diego Padres from triple-A Las Vegas. Jose, 26, a second baseman, is the first of Mota’s four baseball-playing sons to make the major leagues.
“Jose has been working so hard, for so long . . . we have always told him to be patient, and it is finally working out,” Manny said.
