TENNIS ROUNDUP : Yugoslavia, Sweden Play for Cup Title
Defending champion Yugoslavia won the Blue Group title in World Team Cup by defeating Switzerland, 2-1, Saturday on singles victories by Goran Ivanisevic and Goran Prpic at Dusseldorf, Germany.
Yugoslavia plays for the title today against Sweden, which won the Red Group.
Ivanisevic defeated Jakob Hlasek, 6-4, 6-3, then Prpic beat Marc Rosset 6-3, 6-4.
Switzerland’s doubles team of Rosset and Jakob Hlasek rallied to beat Ivanisevic and Slobodan Zivojinovic, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (15-13).
The United States, with no chance of making the final, defeated Germany, 2-1, on victories by Aaron Krickstein and the doubles team Rick Leach and Jim Pugh.
Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia downed Anne Minter of Australia, 6-1, 6-3, in a women’s tournament at Strasbourg, France.
In today’s final, Zrubakova plays Rachel McQuillan of Australia, who beat Noako of Japan, 6-4, 6-3.
Zubrakova then moves on to meet Monica Seles in the opening round of the French Open.
Helen Kelesi of Canada upset top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, in the European Open at Geneva.
Second-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere defeated Tami Whitlinger, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Kelesi in today’s final.
Paolo Cane of Italy beat Jeff Tarango, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals of an ATP tournament at Bologna, Italy.
