Rick Mears had a record lap of 162.276 m.p.h. to win the pole for today’s Miller 200 at Milwaukee’s Wisconsin State Fair Park Speedway.
Mears, who last Sunday won his fourth Indianapolis 500, broke the record of 160.822 he set in 1989.
Mario Andretti was a distant second at 158.907. His son and teammate Michael was third at 158.802 and Danny Sullivan fourth at 157.477.
Meanwhile, Mears’ car owner, Roger Penske, announced that he has signed 22-year-old Paul Tracy, the 1990 American Racing Series champion, to a multiyear contract. Tracy will become a teammate of Mears and Emerson Fittipaldi.
