FULLERTON : Wrong-Way Driver Killed on Freeway

Share

A Placentia man was killed Saturday night when he entered the Orange Freeway going the wrong way and struck two cars head-on, causing one to careen into a third, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Injuries to the other drivers ranged in severity from moderate to major.

Jeffrey Bay, 25, entered the freeway from the Nutwood Avenue off-ramp about 10:50 p.m. and moved into the fast lane, heading south into northbound traffic, said CHP Officer Mike Landon.

The first head-on collision occurred near Chapman Avenue when Bay’s car smashed into a car driven by David Daily, 20, of Rialto.

Daily’s car flipped over onto its side and slid into the slow lane, where it was hit by a car driven by Colleen King, 21, of Orange.

Bay’s car then struck the car traveling behind Daily. That car was driven by Michelle Anderson, 16, and contained a passenger, Monica Lynn Johnson. Both are of Glendora.

Bay, who suffered trauma to the head, chest and abdomen, was dead at the scene, coroner’s officials said.

Daily was taken with major injuries to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. Anderson and Johnson, who sustained minor and moderate injuries, respectively, were treated at Placentia-Linda Community Hospital in Placentia and released. King was uninjured.

The coroner’s office will have the results of a toxicology test, to determine whether Bay was intoxicated, in 10 to 16 weeks.
