Audley Hits, Throws Wichita State Past Creighton in College Series

Mike Audley scored the game-winning run and made the game-saving throw in Wichita State’s 3-2, 12-inning victory over Creighton Monday night in the College World Series.

“I think you saw two hard-nosed, hard-minded clubs that battled each other right to the end, and a lot of outstanding pitching,” said Wichita State Coach Gene Stephenson. “As far as we’re concerned, Creighton played the game of their life. My hat is off to them.”

Creighton’s Alan Benes, younger brother of San Diego Padre pitcher Andy Benes, held the Shockers to four hits and two unearned runs in 8 1/3 innings. On the other side was first-round draft pick Tyler Green, who allowed seven hits, two unearned runs, two walks and struck out 14 in nine innings.

With Green and Shocker reliever Jamie Bluma holding Creighton’s bats in check, Audley scored on Scot McCloughan’s infield single in the top of the 12th inning with two outs, then fired a strike from center field on Dax Jones’ single to get pinch-runner Steve Bruns at the plate.

“We were fortunate that (Jones) hit the ball well and it only took one bounce before it got to me,” Audley said. “I thought it was hit well enough that I would have a chance to get him at the plate.”
