* Elvis Sighted: Barbara Bush is undaunted by newspaper speculation about why she and her husband, George, developed thyroid disorders. Doctors have been testing the water at their various residences because the Bushes and their dog, Millie, developed autoimmune diseases. But the First Lady already has her theory of how the supermarket tabloids will explain it: “You know that someplace, somehow, Elvis is going to be there.”

* Hamming: Cream pies were exchanged at a pork fair in Des Moines, Iowa, recently, but no one asked for recipes. A woman from an animal-rights group threw a pie in the face of Dainna Jellings, the Iowa Pork Queen. Later, another woman threw a pie in the face of a protester. The rights group had said America kills 92 million pigs annually only to feed its “meat addiction.” Retorted a fair spokesman: “As far as interrupting the show, it’s just a pimple.”

* Queen’s 2 Cents: Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly told her daughter, Princess Anne, who is divorcing Capt. Mark Phillips, that their son, Peter, 13, must not be cut off from his father. A source told the Sunday Express: “Peter absolutely hero-worships his father and will undoubtedly be upset if Mark has to move” from the family home.

* Lion and the Lamb: Ethiopia’s imperial pet lion survived a revolution last week, but now the national symbol faces starvation. The aging male lion Toto was kept by Haile Selassie before he was deposed as emperor in 1974. But rebels who took the capital last Tuesday say they can’t keep feeding the huge beast a sheep every three days in a nation with an estimated 7 million starving people.
