Huntington Park : Council Joins Opposition to Hazardous Waste Plant
The Huntington Park City Council has voted unanimously to oppose the construction of a treatment plant for hazardous wastes near Huntington Park High School.
Chem-Clear Inc. plans to build the plant where an abandoned factory now sits at Slauson and Boyle avenues in heavily industrial Vernon, on Huntington Park’s northern border. The high school and scores of homes are within 1,000 feet of the site.
State and federal health officials have said the plant can be operated safely. But citizens groups and, now, the City Council contend that spills, fires and other accidents can always occur.
Plant opponents have asked federal, state and local officials to reconsider the permits they granted to Chem-Clear to build the plant, which could treat as much as 140,000 gallons of hazardous industrial waste each day. Those requests are pending.
