La Mesa police are asking the community’s help in finding a rapist who forced his way into an apartment and assaulted the female occupant at gunpoint.

The rape occurred about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment building in the 7100 block of Amherst Street, police said. The suspect forced his way into the woman’s apartment after asking her about the rent of an adjacent apartment, police said.

Once inside the apartment, the man threatened the woman with a handgun, tied her up and sexually assaulted her. He ransacked the apartment before leaving, police said.
