Munro Rides Generous to Epsom Derby Victory
Alan Munro, widely tipped as a future champion jockey, won his first Epsom Derby Wednesday with 9-1 shot Generous.
Munro, 24, and riding in only his second Derby, sent Generous into the lead with two furlongs to race and held off 14-1 shot Marju, ridden by Willie Carson, by five lengths.
Ireland’s Star of Gdansk, ridden by Christy Roche, also at 14-1, closed late to finish third.
Munro, who rode a 20-1 winner in the race before the Derby, has recently returned from a four-day suspension.
The big disappointments of the race were the 4-1 co-favorites Toulon, the mount of Pat Eddery, and Corrupt, ridden by Cash Asmussen. Neither was able to threaten in the race.
