An attack Tuesday on a La Mesa woman was the sixth by a serial rapist, police said Thursday.

The woman was attacked in her home in the 7100 block of Amherst Street at 10:30 a.m., said Sgt. Glorie Sacco of the La Mesa Police Department.

Police believe the rapist has attacked three women in San Diego and two other La Mesa women since September, 1989, Sacco said.

The rapist pretends to be looking for an apartment to rent and knocks on his intended victim’s door, asking about the apartment next door. Then the rapist apparently asks to use the telephone and forces his way into the victim’s apartment.

The suspect has been described as white, 5-foot-8, 180 pounds with a pot belly, brown, neck-length hair with a neatly trimmed beard.

The man, believed to be 35 to 40 years old, wears gold rimmed aviator-style glasses. He is armed with a semi-automatic, blue steel handgun, Sacco said.

Police ask residents to be aware of the rapist’s method and to call if they see any suspicious behavior.
