Base Closure Opens New Possibilities
Recently, Proposition J was rejected by Orange County voters. I would appreciate consideration of a sensible recommendation about the construction of new prison facilities tied into the closing of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station. For example:
* The base facilities are basically secure (gates, fences, etc.).
* Practically all new barracks are in place.
* All service facilities (medical, athletic, library, food, etc.) are in place.
* Vocational training facilities are in place.
The time and cost to convert the base to a working prison facility should be minimal, and civilian jobs lost by the closing of the base can be offset by jobs at the new facility. Proper utilization of these facilities could eliminate controversy by money-hungry special-interest groups.
