VENTURA : Fees for Some Police Services Approved
Homeowners with errant burglar alarms and hosts of loud parties must pay fees for police calls to their homes, the Ventura City Council decided Monday.
The council voted to approve 95 new and increased fees--expected to raise up to $225,000 per year--to help the city balance its budget.
Last week, the council cut $1.34 million from the city’s two-year, $101.2-million budget for 1990 to 1992.
The city was suffering a shortfall of $1.55 million after the Legislature allowed counties to pass along to cities expenses for booking prisoners into jail and collecting property taxes.
The council approved the new fee structure to make up for the remainder of the shortfall not covered by the budget cuts.
Most of the fees will affect developers and those who use special police services.
The council’s vote Monday increased levies for zoning modifications, grading permits, map-making and amendments to the city’s growth plans, among other services.
It also established fees for answering false alarms, quelling loud parties, processing concealed-weapon permits and making fingerprint records.
